| Forensic means ‘for the courts’. Lost City delved into specific objects that are considered trace evidence at a crime scene. Fascinated by the different shapes, angles, hues, and distribution of blood spatter patterns, the scientific and gothic allure of strands of hair,the intriguing biometric techniques of fingerprinting and DNA analysis, we decided to translate and transform these somewhat macabre but intriguing objects into hand embroidered works of beauty on canvas pillows. | ||

| Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), was a Belgian painter and one of the most talented botanical artists ever known. Esteemed by his peers as the ‘Raphael of flowers’, he devoted his life to plant illustration and his series of rose paintings are considered to be his finest work. Painstakingly hand-embroidered on silk, our pillows with Roses are an homage to Redoute’s artistry. | ||

| Mirrorwork is an important cultural tradition found on the clothing of nomads, peasants and the elite throughout the Middle East and Indian subcontinent, where it originated during the Mughal empire. The term "shisha" means glass in Persian and Urdu. Mirrors are used to avert the evil eye and are also associated with vitality, magical protection, beauty, the mystical, as well as being a reflection of reality. At Lost City, we have reinterpreted this traditional art form to create a group of vivid and modern pillows that transcend cultural boundaries. | ||

| Our Polka dot pillows are inspired by 19th century gold leaf textlies in India. Gold and silver leaf is used in Indian textiles as a decorative finish on fabric, which is an influence of the Muslim courts. This style of ornamentation is called “Roghan” and the technique is used as a substitute for elaborate embroideries. Polka dots are hand-embroidered in gold/silver/red/black/white on canvas and silk. | ||

Phulkari embroidery or ‘flower work’ is a community craft in Punjab, India. Designs and techniques are passed from one generation of women to another in the villages of North India. The motifs, colors and patterns used in Phulkari have religious and magical significance, and there is folklore associated with various kinds of phulkari designs. Lost City took the intricate diamond motif and hand-embroidered it on muslin in variations of metallic wire and silk yarn.
